Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy which dates back thousands of years and has been used in many different cultures.  It is much more than a relaxing foot massage - it is one of the most powerful, non-invasive complementary therapies available.  Through specific pressure applied to reflexes on the feet, which it is believed correspond to particular parts of your body, it is possible to stimulate the body's own healing process, help restore the body back to its natural state of balance and bring about deep relaxation.  It can be used to maintain good health and positive well-being.

Reflexologists cannot diagnose, cure or prescribe but can tell if certain organs or glands are not functioning to their optimum ability and help the body to heal itself.

What are the benefits of reflexology?

Some of the many benefits  include:

Reduces stress

Reduces muscle tension

Improves blood circulation

Assists the body's own natural healing process

Revitalises energy

Aids restful sleep

What conditions can it help?

Reflexology can help with pretty much anything, acute and chronic! It treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. Common conditions include:

Digestive problems (e.g. constipation, Irritable bowel syndrome, bloatedness)

Hormonal problems (e.g. PMT, menopause, fertility problems)

Respiratory problems (e.g. asthma, bronchitis, coughs)

Migraines and headaches

Stress and anxiety

Sleep disturbances

What happens during a treatment?

At your first appointment, I will take a detailed history regarding your health and well-being. You will then be asked to remove your socks and shoes and make yourself comfortable on the couch or recliner.  After cleaning and examining your feet, I will begin the treatment.

Some people may experience slight discomfort on some areas of the foot, which indicates an imbalance in the corresponding part of the body.  Many people fall asleep as it can be very relaxing. I encourage you to close your eyes and let yourself relax as this promotes deeper healing.

What should I expect after a treatment?

Some people feel very relaxed and sleepy whilst others may be re-energised.  As the body starts to re-balance itself, you may experience a "healing process" that can last a day or two.  Common effects include cold/flu like symptoms, increased bowel movements, a more frequent need to empty your bladder.  I advise you to avoid anything that requires concentration straight after your treatment such as driving or operating machinery and to drink plenty of water.  Tolerance to alcohol can be lowered following reflexology.

How many treatments will I need?

This is dependent on individual circumstances and the initial consultation will help assess the number of sessions needed and their frequency.  Most people would benefit from a weekly treatment to start with for 4-6 weeks then may wish to gradually reduce it to once a fortnight then once a month for maintenance.  I will be happy to discuss this with you and may suggest other therapies which may also benefit you.
