Hopi Ear Candles

What are Hopi Ear Candles?

Traditionally, ear candles were used by Shamanic healers.  Hopi means peace and refer to a tribe of Pueblo Indians who are very spiritual and have vast medicinal knowledge.

The candles are used for treating ear, nose and throat disorders.  The candles create a mild suction within the ear canal which helps to draw out impurities as well as balancing any pressure in the head, sinuses and ears.  The treatment is able to stimulate the ear, nose and throat and all the sinuses can be relieved over a series of treatments.

I use BioSun candles. Natural ingredients are used to produce the ear candles which include 100% beeswax, honey extract, sage, St John's Wort, chamomile, beta carotene and pesticide free cotton.

The process is very relaxing and soothing.    Afterwards, a relaxing face and ear massage is performed to  help distribute the vapour, aid blood and lymph drainage and assist with draining the sinus tubes.

What happens during a treatment?

At your first appointment, I will take a history regarding your health and well-being.  You remain fully clothed for this treatment (minus footwear and jewellery) and will be asked to lie on each side of your body on the couch in turn as I gently insert the candle into the auditory canal, light it and hold it in a vertical position as it burns. Each candle takes between 7-15 minutes to burn and you will hear a pleasant crackling sound and experience a warm comfortable feeling. Lastly, you will be asked to lie on your back so that I can perform a relaxing face and ear massage using oil.

What should I expect after a treatment?

Many clients find the treatment relaxing. As well as the relieved feeling that comes from reduced pressure in the ears and sinuses, clients may experience a general calming effect.

What are the side effects and when should it be avoided?

Some clients may experience headaches or light popping in the ears after treatment.

Hopi ear candles should not be used if there is any inflammation or infection in the ear and are not suitable for people who have had recent ear surgery, or those with ear grommets or tubes, perforated ear drums, or allergies to any of the products in the candle.

Anyone who is receiving medical treatment for any ear condition should always consult their doctor first.

How often should I have treatment?

The duration between treatments depends on the severity of any condition you may have.  Those with really blocked sinuses for example may wish to have a treatment 1-3 times a week.  For milder conditions and for relaxation, once a week or fortnight will be sufficient.  I will be happy to discuss what would be beneficial to you and this may involve combining Hopi Ear Candles with another therapy.
